Significant People of Commercial Fishing

Fish Companies

In 1944, the first fish-processing plant opened on the north waterfront. The Bozeman Canning Company built a 58-by-115-foot two-story building at 1520 Norton Avenue (now West Marine View Drive). Two years later, the business was renamed the Pictsweet Canning Company — one of the few industries on the waterfront that employed women.

In 1947, local business man, Steve Chase, purchased Pictsweet’s fish canning plant.  The business eventually would be known as the Everett Fish Company.  The company saw its largest load to date in 1962 when the Regina, a Seattle based ship, brought in its haul of 65,000 pounds of black cod, 25,000 pounds of red snapper, 10,000 pounds of sole and another 5,000 pounds of mixed-cod.  All of the fish had been caught in Washington waters.

In 1964 the company added a 1.3 million pound capacity freezer and entered into the business of air freighting fish around the world.  The business was sold in 1973 at the same time the fishing industry was in decline.
