Comercial Fishing Influences
Had a commercial fishing fleet not existed in Everett, there might not have been funds to dredge the fishing channels. Many of the improvements in the North Waterfront occurred because of the presence of the Everett fishing fleet.
Education was very important to fishing families, hoping that education would bring a better, more successful life. This value contributed to large amounts of education in the community and children of the fishermen going to college and becoming professionals.
While fishing involved significantly fewer people than the lumber and shingle industry, it still made large impacts on jobs. Fishing required skills that could be learned while on the job, opening up possibilities for many people. It also provided countless summer jobs for the youth in Everett.
Fishing may not have impacted Everett in the same ways that other industries did, but the jobs it provided, the money that was made for the waterfront and the values that were instilled into the workers, have helped shape what Everett is today.
